San Martino della Battaglia stands in a fantastic position on the morainic benacense amphitheatre, 8 km far from Desenzano del Garda. This village has the majestic tower, called La Spia d’Italia (Italy’s spy), the symbol of the bloody battle fought between King Vittorio Emanuele 2nd’s Piedmontese troops and the Austrians during the second war of independence, in 1859. This neo-Gothic tower, 74 meters high, was built between 1880 and 1893 by the architect Frizzoni of Bergamo. This tower is decorated inside with some frescoes representing famous battles.
